Yoga, Meditation May Reduce Dementia Risk

meditation 1The Alzheimer’s Association reports that 10 to 20 percent of adults 65 years and older are likely to have mild cognitive impairment (MCI) characterized by memory and thinking problems. The symptoms of MCI worsen with time increasing the risk of Alzheimer’s disease. Six to fifteen percent of these adults will develop dementia.

A study published in the journal of Alzheimer’s disease shows that completing a three month yoga and meditation course will reduce the risk of older adults suffering from mild cognitive impairment, the precursor to development of Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. The participants practiced Kundalini yoga attending class for one hour once every week and practiced Kirtan Kriya meditation for 20 minutes every day over the 3 months.
