Ghrelin, the hunger hormone, could interfere with decision making and rationality. The hormone has been implicated in reward behavior such as drug addiction.
The research carried out with rats investigated the potential role of ghrelin in impulsive behavior. “Impulsivity” meant both impulsive action and impulsive choice.
Injecting ghrelin into the rats’ brains made them unable resist pressing the levers, meaning they had greater impulsivity. Blocking ghrelin on the other hand reduced impulsive behavior in a big way. It gives credence to efforts to develop ghrelin antagonists to fight off obesity and manage drug intake.
Bottom line: Don’t make big decisions when you’re hungry. Eat, and think it through carefully.
