Social engagement has been found to slow down mental decline as people grow older. Involvement in social causes and civic groups such as church groups, neighborhood associations, and volunteer groups was helpful.
– There was slight improvement in memory, thinking capacity, and mental skills for people of age 50.
– Group involvement was linked to better cognitive test scores even after accounting for better health and higher education.
– The importance of leading a healthy lifestyle was emphasized and to control conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes and high cholesterol.
The main shortcoming, he said, is that people who join community organizations are a very “select” group. They’re likely to be “intellectually curious” and have relatively sharp mental and social skills to begin with.
