Understanding Why the Weather Affects Your Migraines

winter-womanMigraines affect an approximate 29.5 million in the US with the majority being women. Migraines are typically characterized by intense throbbing or pulsing pain on one or both sides of the head. Other symptoms associated with migraines are sensitivity to light and sound as well as nausea and vomiting.

A study published in the Journal of Headache and Pain indicates that people who are sensitive to changes in temperature have a higher incidence of migraines when the weather becomes cold. The exact mechanism in which the weather triggers migraines is not well known. The aspects of weather that could cause migraines are changes in atmospheric pressure, bright sunlight, strong winds and high humidity.
