Sitting for long periods may make you age faster. The sedentary lifestyle promoted faster aging of cells in the body.
– Older women who sat for a long time during the day and got no exercise had cells that were eight years biologically older than their actual.
– Women who sat for 10 hours a day or longer – and got less than 40 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity daily – had shorter telomeres.
– The benefits of exercise are immense. Start exercising from a young age right through to old age.
Telomeres naturally shorten with age, but health and lifestyle factors — such as smoking and obesity — can accelerate the process. Shortened telomeres are linked with heart disease, diabetes and cancer, the researchers explained in background notes.
