A new study finds that the users of hookup culture dating apps like Tinder have a more negative perception of body image than non-users. These hookup culture apps encourage self-objectification through accepting or rejecting a possible match based on physical appearance.
Tinder has about 50 million active users who use their smartphones as a handheld singles club. The app is popular among young adults between the ages of 18 and 24 years. The study finds that Tinder can be useful because compliments from other users can help endorse worth and boost egos.
However, the study also found that the act of being scrutinized, appraised, and objectified may make people more conscious of their bodies and usher in feelings of anxiety and depression. Tinder can also fuel narcissistic propensities.
