A study carried out on approximately 19,000 American adults reveals that those that slept for less than five hours took 21 percent more sugary drinks compared to those that slept for 7 to 8 hours.
- Findings indicate that improving sleep helped to reduce the consumption of sugar.
- People who slept for six hours each night consumed 11 percent more sugary drinks compared to those who got more sleep.
- Improving sleep could help people alter their sugar consumption habit and limit their sugar intake.
“We think there may be a positive feedback loop where sugary drinks and sleep loss reinforce one another, making it harder for people to eliminate their unhealthy sugar habit,” said lead author Aric Prather, an assistant professor of psychiatry.
