Stye in the eye

Some people suffer with recurrent Styes. Most don’t – they are one offs. They are caused by blockage of an eyelash hair follicle – causing build up of secretion and a lump, which when infected becomes a stye. They can cause a lot of swelling and discomfort, especially if they occur on the inside (eye) surface of the eyelid. The treatment is mainly just local palliation – hot compresses etc. The situation usually resolves. If it is particularly severe, the stye can be ruptured using a sterile needle, or the hair from the blocked follicle can be pulled out. Both of these techniques allow pus to drain.
