Stages of Osteoarthritis of the Knee

kneeOsteoarthritis is a degenerative disease of the joint mainly affecting the cartilage at the end of bones. Break down of the cartilage leads to pain, swelling, and problems moving the joint. The most common type is osteoarthritis of the knee which follows these development stages:

Stage 0: (Normal knee health)

Stage 1: (Minor) Small lumps will form in the knee area with slight damage to the cartilage.

Stage 2: (Mild) Symptoms of osteoarthritis are more noticeable especially the thinning cartilage layer.

Stage 3: (Moderate) Cartilage is worn out with the bone protruding into the joint. Knee is experiencing pain, discomfort and joint inflammation.

Stage 4: (Severe) The most advanced stage characterized by reduced joint space, constant inflammation, and joint stiffness
