Smoking Makes Women Vulnerable To Brain Bleeds, Study Finds

cigarette-girlA study in the journal Stroke indicates that smokers, especially female smokers, are at a high risk of bleeding in the subarachnoid region of the brain. Subarachnoid hemorrhage is a form of stroke which is characterized by bleeding in the linings of the brain. The primary symptom of subarachnoid hemorrhage is a sudden severe headache at the back of the head.

The researchers revealed that women who smoked 21 to 30 cigarettes each day were 8.35 times more likely to suffer subarachnoid hemorrhage than non-smokers. The risk for men who smoke was 2.76 times greater than men who were non-smokers. Quitting smoking can significantly reduce the risk of subarachnoid hemorrhage.
