Smokers Diagnosed With Pneumonia Found To Have Higher Risk of Lung Cancer

smokingSmoking is known to cause approximately 85 percent of all lung cancer cases. Lung cancer is a leading cause of mortality in the US and the five year survival rate is a mere 17 percent for lung cancer patients. The aggressive nature of the disease makes early diagnosis quite difficult.

A recent study undertaken by Tel Aviv University and Rabin Medical Center researchers has indicated heavy smokers diagnosed with pneumonia are a high risk lung cancer group. The researchers propose that heavy smokers admitted to the hospital with community-acquired pneumonia should be screened to facilitate early diagnosis and interventions for lung cancer hence reducing the high mortality.
