Cardiovascular risk factors can be amplified by the lack of sufficient sleep or by oversleeping. Sleep conditions such as insomnia and obstructive sleep apnoea are closely linked to heart problems.
- Adequate sleep is very important for overall health, ranking equally to a balanced diet and to physical exercise.
- Sleep problems have been linked to heart disease, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, stroke and obesity.
- Further research is required to establish whether poor sleep actually causes heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke and type II diabetes.
“Patients need to be aware that adequate sleep is important, just as being physically active and eating a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean meat and fish are important for cardiovascular health,” she said.
