Skin Prick Allergy Testing

Skin prick testing is when a tiny amount of allergen – like dust, or grass pollen, is inoculated into the skin using a tiny sharp point. If you are allergic to the substance inoculated, a reaction will occur. It is a good test, although slightly difficult to standardise, and subjective in that the size of the reaction is measured with a ruler, and the reaction site is not always uniform etc. We use this testing to corroborate allergy test we do on serum – which we get from a blood test, and then measure the antibodies present in your blood – its more scientific, and the gold standard for allergy testing. That test is called ImmunoCAP.
