Seniors’ Worsening Depression May Predict Dementia

depressed manA Dutch study indicates that worsening symptoms of depression in older adults could be an indicator of the onset of early dementia. The study could not prove a cause and effect relationship between depression and dementia but it raises the possibility of a shared line of pathology in dementia and depression.

Other findings were that having temporary depression even if it is severe does not have a lasting effect on the risk of dementia. According to Dr. Gisele Wolf-Klein, director of geriatric education at Northwell Health, different courses of depression may reflect different underlying causes, and might be linked to different risks of dementia.
