Screening Could Prevent One in Five Ovarian Cancer Deaths, Study Shows

ID-100360744A fourteen year study by the University College London has found that approximately 1000 women can be saved from ovarian cancer through annual checks. The simple blood checks to screen for ovarian cancer when carried out annually can pick the disease early enough to be effectively treated. Therefore, the screening has been shown to prevent one in five ovarian cancer deaths.

90 out of 100 women diagnosed with early stage ovarian cancer survive for five years or more compared to just 3 out of 100 with late stage disease. According to Professor Usha Menon of the UCL Women’s Health Department, the findings of the study are welcome and will provide fresh motivation for greater efforts in the area of ovarian cancer.
