Rest after Concussion to Avoid ‘Sustained Brain Damage’

sportsmanRecent research undertaken at the Georgetown University Medical Center has shown the importance of resting after a head injury. Concussions are mild brain injuries that are not life threatening but can be life changing.

Doctors will recommend that an individual is given several days of rest after a concussion. However, many people especially sportsmen do not heed this advice.

Studies have shown that almost all people with single concussions spontaneously recover, but athletes who play contact sports are much more susceptible to lasting brain damage. Concussion can have long-term effects if it is not given the respect it deserves. Rest is vital to help avoid lasting neural damage.
