The season of giving is already here and people also end up giving and receiving a gift of a different kind, flu. The week starting Dec. 7 and ending Dec. 13 is the National Influenza Awareness week. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says that outbreaks of seasonal influenza each year with the greatest number of cases being recorded between January and February.
Influenza is ranked as the eighth among the leading causes of death in the US. A number of pharmacists and clinics are providing flu jabs. These flu vaccinations, according to Dr. Laurence Polsky, Calvert County Health Officer, help to prevent hospitalization and help to bring down the incidences of absenteeism at the work place. The flu vaccine is particularly helpful for the most vulnerable such as young children and the elderly.
