Quitting Smoking May Lower Alcohol Intake

quit smokingAdults who have attempted to quit smoking actually drink less alcohol compared to smokers who have not tried to quit. The study findings, published in BMC Public Health, contradict the notion that people trying to stop smoking will drink more alcohol to compensate.

The National Institutes of Health reports that consuming alcohol can be a trigger for smoking and could therefore deter attempts to quit cigarettes. People attempting to quit smoking also reported fewer instances of binge drinking. All attempts should be made to limit alcohol intake to avoid relapse.
