Research findings published in the journal Scientific Reports indicates that the consumption of too much fructose by expectant mothers could lead to placental and fetal defects. Fructose is usually processed differently in the body whereby it is broken down by the liver into triglycerides which are a form of fat.
Previous studies have linked the consumption of too much fructose to the problems of diabetes and obesity. Fructose is the form of sugar found honey, fruits, and vegetables.
The study carried out in mice fed on a diet high in fructose levels had smaller fetuses and larger placentas. They also had high levels of uric acid and triglycerides.
