Non allergic blocked noses

Quite a lot has been written on allergy – its most common site of action is the nose, causing blockage, running, sneezing etc. However some people are not allergic – we test them to find out. Often the cause of symptoms is a bend in the cartilage of the nose – a deviated nasal septum. This can be corrected with an operation, as a daycase, called Septoplasty. Others may just have non allergic non-inflammatory (NANI) nose disease – which we don’t understand very well. A variety of anti-cholinergic and antihistamine sprays can be used to treat this, along with steroid sprays. A CT scan of the sinuses is usually required to rule out underlying sinus disease (which can be corrected with day case endoscopic sinus surgery). If all is negative and sprays don’t work, AND the most important symptom is blockage, a laser turbinoplasty or turbinectomy can be performed, to reduce the size of the inferior turbinates. These are day case procedures, under local anaesthetic, or general anaesthetic.
