New Treatment Shows Promise for Knee Arthritis

An experimental treatment for knee arthritis is under development with the researchers carrying out a small study to evaluate the safety of using a patient’s own stem cells in the treatment of osteoarthritis of the knee.

No known treatment for osteoarthritis is known today. Osteoarthritis is the most prevalent form of musculoskeletal disease among adults and is sometimes referred to as the wear-and-tear. The risk of osteoarthritis is dependent on genetics, obesity, injury, and joint overuse.

The treatment involves the extraction of stem cells from fat cells in the body and injecting them directly into the damaged knee joint. The study reveals that a good number of patients experienced improvement in function and pain. The findings were very encouraging and will require testing with a larger group of patients.
