Middle ear infections: Causes and treatments

ear dropMiddle ear infections are common and affect even children. They are mainly a consequence of upper respiratory tract infections. There are two kinds of infections of the middle ear, otitis media and mastoiditis. Symptoms of these infections include intense pain deep in the ear. One may also experience sensation of a blocked ear due to a blockage in the Eustachian tubes.

Infections of the middle ear need to be treated early as they can lead to complications such as brain infections. Middle ear infections are normally treated with a course of oral antibiotics and nasal decongestants. Topical antibiotic ear drops may be used if there are perforations in the ear drum. Intravenous antibiotics may need to be used for severe cases. Surgery may be needed when complications have arises such as brain infections or nerve paralysis.
