Men Get Osteoporosis, Too

Osteoporosis is not only a problem for women only. Men also suffer from osteoporosis even though its onset comes much later in life.

Key takeaways:

  • Men have a significant risk of osteoporotic fracture since they are less likely to have their bone health checked.
  •      Men suffer half as many osteoporotic fractures as women, but are more likely to be permanently disabled or to die within a year.
  • The risk factors for osteoporosis in men are chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), celiac disease, and treatments for problems such as depression and prostate cancer.

“We need to pay a lot more attention to osteoporosis in men,” Dr. Adler said in an interview. “It’s erroneous to think it’s a lady’s disease. And because many men and their doctors think that, men are less likely than women to be evaluated and treated after a low-trauma fracture.”
