Male Birth Control: More Options Soon?

father-and-his-daughterVasectomy and condoms remain the two choices at contraception available for men despite the many years of research and development of a contraceptive. However, experts now believe that one or two male birth control options will be available in 2018.

Experts say that developing a male contraceptive is challenging since sperm production remains constant. According to Mara Roth, MD, an endocrinologist, men produce 1000 sperms every second. The other challenge lies in the option being reversible just like the contraceptive available for women.

Some of the options in the pipeline are in the form of gels nestorone and testosterone gel, and vasalgel; and in the form of pills such as retinoic acid and H2-Gamendazole.
