Irregular Heartbeat May Be Deadly in Car Crash

drivingGetting into automobile accident is especially risky for those people who have atrial fibrillation. Atrial fibrillation refers to an irregular heartbeat and has been linked to high chances of dying when in a car crash.

The study reveals that the death rates a car crashes were 7.6 percent for those with atrial fibrillation and 2.6 percent for those without the condition. After adjustment for other factors such as injury severity, gender, and existing health, the risk of death for crash victims with atrial fibrillation was 1.5 times higher.

Atrial fibrillation is associated with higher mortality, length of stay and cost when patients are hospitalized for bypass surgery, hip replacement or heart failure.
