Improper Contact Lens Use Can Damage Eyes: CDC

Woman applying contact lens in her eye.CDC researchers report that the unsafe use of contact lenses – such as sleeping with the lenses or using the same pair for too long – is leading to serious eye injuries for a good number of people.

People do not take contact lens hygiene seriously, researchers say. The improper wear and care of contact lenses will lead to eye infections that sometimes cause serious long-term damage to the eyes. The researchers noted that 1 in every 5 patients with contact lenses had scarred cornea, corneal transplant, and other types of eye damage caused by infection.

People with contact lenses should not keep their lenses in while sleeping. Additionally, they should replace their contact lenses as per the recommendation of their optician or doctor. Also, eating fatty fish could offset the risk of eye diseases in diabetics.
