Healthy Diet Could Lower Hypertension Risk for Women with Gestational Diabetes

woman eatingGestational diabetes is quite common among pregnant women and will affect around 5% of all pregnancies. A study conducted by Dr. Cuilin Zhang and collegues at Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development has shown that diabetes in pregnancy increased a the risk of developing hypertension even 16 years after giving birth.

In pregnancy, the placenta produces a number of hormones which impede insulin from working properly in the control of blood sugar levels. The study also revealed that a healthy diet has been proven to reduce high blood pressure risk in the general population and it is also effective in reducing the risk in the group of high-risk women.
