A study undertaken in New Zealand by children’s health specialists has called for the universal chickenpox vaccine to be added to the list of state-funded immunisations. The study also showed that numerous children are admitted to hospital with viral illness also varicella. 10 percent of cases hospitalized with chicken pox end up with admission in intensive care unit.
The Immunisation Advisory Centre at Auckland University has over the last decade been calling for the government to fund a chickenpox vaccine. The government only pays for those at high risk of specific diseases caused by other medical conditions. Chicken pox imposes a big financial burden on families and free immunization.
