Half of Our Calories from ‘Ultra-Processed’ Foods

canned foodA new study has revealed that more than half of the average American diet is composed of ultra-processed foods. The ultra-processes foods make up ninety percent of excess sugar calories consumed by Americans. Ultra-processed foods include packaged baked foods, reconstituted meat products, soda, desserts, sweet snacks, candy and the instant noodles and soups.

People who ate the most ultra-processed food exceeded the upper limit of daily sugar intake by more than 80 percent. Processed foods contained added salts, sugars, preservatives, and flavorings. These foods contain too much sugar which increases the risk for diseases such as tooth decay, weight gain and obesity, heart disease, and type II diabetes.
