Gum Disease Bacteria Linked To Esophageal Cancer

Here’s another critical reason why every adult needs a dental checkup at least once a year – to check for gum disease, aka, gingivitis.

Researchers from the University of Louisville in the US and the Henan University of Science and Technology in China have suggested that the bacterium that causes gum disease could be a risk factor for esophageal cancer. The other known risk factors for esophageal cancer are diet, heredity, age and chemical exposure.

A dentist’s screening for gingivitis bacteria in dental plaque may identify people subject to esophageal cancer.

Bleeding gums are an early sign of gum disease – a sign you need a good dental exam and cleaning, and better flossing and brushing at home.
