A new study sought to investigate the role of dietary fatty acids such as omega-6 and omega-3 in the development of the embryo’s brain. The study conducted on the developing fetuses of rats at the Tohoku University’s School of Medicine in Japan show marked visual and behavioral changes in the omega-3 deprived animal fetuses.
The results of the study indicates that that excess maternal consumption of omega-6 combined with insufficient intake of omega-3 causes abnormal brain development that can have long-lasting effects on the offspring’s mental state. The conclusion was that pregnant mothers are recommended to consume omega-6 and omega-3 essential fats at a 1:1 ratio.
