Earlier Intervention Leads To Better Weight Recovery in Children with Multiple Risk Factors for Weight Faltering

A recent study published in the Journal of Pediatrics has showed that early intervention in the management of underweight children led to greater weight recovery especially among children with multiple household risk factors. The association between household factors such as overcrowding, poverty, and single parenthood to recovery from being underweight was not well known.

Maureen Black, PhD, professor of pediatrics at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and lead author, says that children with multiple household risk factors showed better recovery than children with only one or two household risk factors. These household factors lead to mealtime stress and/or disrupted family routines which affect how a child eats and grows. The study also emphasizes the need to involve the whole family in the treatment process to give better results.
