A diabetic coma results from extreme levels of high or low blood sugar. Diabetic coma can cause brain damage, and be fatal. People suffering from diabetes must know how to control their blood sugar and what interventions they can make when levels are outside normal range.
The three causes of diabetes coma are:
- Very low blood glucose levels referred to as hypoglycemia in type I diabetes.
- Diabetic ketoacidosis which implies high blood ketone levels in type I diabetes.
3. Hyperglycemic hyperosmolar syndrome in type 2 diabetes.
Diabetes coma should be reversed within a very short period by addressing the possible cause of the problem. In cases of hypoglycemia, glucose should be given or a glucagon injection.
