Sleep is very important for health. However, studies suggest that a good number of people do not get sufficient sleep. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have reported that 10 percent of people experience chronic insomnia and 25 percent of people lack sleep.
A study at the University of Tokyo led by Dr. Tomohide Yamada, a diabetologist, indicated that naps of 60 minutes were linked to 82 percent increase in cardiovascular disease and 27 percent greater risk of all-cause mortality. Short naps might have a beneficial effect on our health but the mechanism is not well understood. Naps of about 20-30 minutes can improve alertness without leading to further tiredness.
