Dance Returns the ‘Joy of Movement’ To People with Parkinson’s

dancingThere are about 10 million people worldwide with Parkinson’s disease that is characterized by stiff limbs, poor balance and tremors. Dancing is perhaps not an activity that can be associated with people who suffer from the progressive movement disorder.

A program aptly called Dance for PD has been running for the last 15 years has been helping people with Parkinson’s disease alongside their spouses and family members. The dance program has piqued the interest of scientists who would want to find ways in which dance can ease the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease.

Some short term studies have shown that dance may improve the ease of walking. The focus for the scientists is to study what dance can achieve for people with Parkinson’s disease that is more than physical therapy.
