Couples’ Caffeine Intake Before Pregnancy May Affect Miscarriage Risk

caffeineMiscarriage is the spontaneous loss of a fetus before 20 weeks of gestation. An estimated 15 to 20 in every 100 women will experience a miscarriage and the risk of miscarriage increases with age.

A study published in the journal Fertility and Sterility has revealed that women who took a multivitamin every day prior to conception and during early pregnancy were less likely to have a miscarriage than women who did not take a daily multivitamin.

The study also proposes that people trying for a baby should take note of their caffeine intake, after finding that both male and female partners who consume at least two caffeinated beverages daily in the weeks before conception may be at greater risk for miscarriage.
