Citrus Fruit Antioxidants May Prevent Chronic Diseases Caused By Obesity

Citrus fruits contain a number of antioxidants that may prevent a range of health problems such as blood pressure and ischemic stroke associated with oxidative stress. The health benefits are linked to antioxidants known as flavonoids that are the largest group of phytonutrients.

A study has revealed that citrus flavanones can prevent or delay the onset of chronic diseases caused by obesity in humans. Obesity causes oxidative stress and is therefore a major cause of heart disease, liver disease, and type II diabetes.

The study carried out on mice indicates that a diet rich in flavanones such as eriocitrin, hesperidin, and eriodictyol reduced cell damage markers such as thiobarbituric acid reactive substances by as much as about 50 to 60 percent.
