Brain Aging Accelerated By 10 Years with Midlife Overweight, Obesity

SONY DSCNew research findings by researchers at the University of Cambridge show that being overweight or obese in midlife may age the brain by around 10 years.

Middle-aged adults who were overweight or obese were reported to have white matter volume that was comparable to the white matter volume of lean adults who were 10 years older. For example, the white matter volume of a 50-year-old overweight adult was equivalent to that of a 60-year-old lean adult.

Obesity is a major health problem in the world today and these findings reveals that it may have negative consequences for the brain. Obesity may hasten the onset and progression of brain shrinkage, a problem associated with old age.
