Beware, Asthma Suffers: Migraines May Worsen

ID-10022288The findings of a study by the University of Cincinnati published in the journal Headache indicates that pre-existing asthma is a strong predictor of future chronic migraine attacks in people suffering from occasional migraine headaches.

The study sponsored by the National Headache Foundation worked with 4500 participants who had experienced episodic migraines or fewer than 15 headaches per month in 2008. According to Richard Lipton, MD, director of the Montefiore Headache Center, migraine and asthma have a common characteristic in that they involve smooth muscle activation in the blood vessels and airways.

The study revealed that people with asthma and episodic migraines were more likely to suffer from new onset chronic migraines that are even more debilitating.
